This new clip from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is pretty exciting, and not just because we get another glimpse of Peggy Carter. It may well be foreshadowing an event that will change the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Throughout season two, fans have been theorizing that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will soon introduce the Inhumans to the MCU. The Inhumans are a superpowered race with an origin story that riffs on your typical “ancient aliens” mythos. The alien Kree visited Earth in prehistoric times, experimented on humans, and created a new race that formed its own civilization. They were the Inhumans, and as we already know from Marvel’s recent press conference, the Inhumans are getting their own movie in 2018.

The clip is a flashback to the ’40s, with Peggy Carter interrogating HYDRA scientist Daniel Whitehall. Whitehall discusses an ancient myth about aliens who fell to Earth on a shooting star, intending to conquer humankind. This may be the origin of an artifact known as the Obelisk, which plays a major part in this season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Agent Coulson and his team have spent the past few episodes on two mysteries: searching for the Obelisk, and decoding the symbols drawn by people who were healed using Kree blood. This week we learned the symbols form a map of a city, which could be the Inhuman city Attilan. On top of this we also have the increasing number of human/Kree connections in the show, from Coulson being brought back to life using Kree blood, to the likelihood that the characters Skye and Raina are both part Kree (or Inhuman).

Right now there are only two plausible options for where this story is going. Either the city is Kree in origin, or this is all leading up to the official introduction of the Inhumans. Since Guardians of the Galaxy already includes Kree characters, using Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to introduce the Inhumans seems like a more practical option.

There are even comics about Inhuman characters who grow up thinking they are normal humans, such as Ms. Marvel protagonist Kamala Khan. This would be an efficient way of creating a lot of superpowered characters at once, all while circumventing Marvel Studios’ lack of access to the film rights for X-Men mutants. And the more superpowered characters they have, the closer they get to a situation where a version of their Civil War storyline can occur.

As Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is so fond of telling us, it’s all connected.
