If you noticed a small change to your Windows desktop this morning in the form of a funky little Windows icon hiding in your taskbar, you have a free copy of Microsoft’s newest operating system waiting for you.
Starting its planned rollout of free copies of Windows 10 for Windows 7 and 8.1 users, the company has pushed notifications to eligible customers in the form of a taskbar alert. Upon clicking the notification you’ll be prompted to enter some reservation information, confirm your decision to reserve a free copy of Windows 10, and that’s that.
Once the download is available you’ll automatically be notified that your free copy is ready for you to install, just in case you forget.
Microsoft also announced on Monday that Windows 10 will be available on July 29, and will remain free to all eligible users for a full year after launch, but if you want to get in on the ground floor, this quick reservation process is the easiest way.
