You would think charging Apple’s latest iPhone would cost at least a few dollars a year, but then you would be wrong. According to energy company Opower, it costs a measly $0.47 per year to charge your iPhone 6.
If you picked up the bigger iPhone 6 Plus, it will suck up a slightly more costly $0.52 worth of energy a year. The new iPhones are big spenders in comparison to last year’s iPhone 5S, which came in at a frugal $0.41.
Opower’s numbers are derived from the expectation that you fully charge your iPhone every night. When it comes to other electronics around the home, Opower’s numbers show TVs use 72 times the power of your iPhone 6 per year, while a laptop will use 14 times the energy.
Apple always touts its environmentally-friendly habits when they show off a new product, and these numbers show the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet that criteria when it comes to energy efficiency. Now you can now charge up your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus much faster than usual, with the knowledge that it won’t dent your wallet.
