2 dead in apparent murder-suicide on UCLA campus

Two men are dead after a shooting at the University of California Los Angeles’s Westwood campus on Wednesday, according to the LAPD.

The shooting took place at about 10am PT in the Engineering IV building, UCLA confirmed. Los Angeles Police Department officials said both victims have died. Authorities have not yet released their identies.

“Police have confirmed that two people are dead in a shooting at UCLA’s Engineering IV building,” UCLA said in a statement posted at 11:15am PT. 

LAPD said at 12:13pm PT that the threat to UCLA students is now over and they are no longer pursuing a suspect. The lockdown on the campus has been lifted, police confirmed.

LAPD Chief Charlie Beck confirmed in a Wednesday afternoon press conference that a note was found at the site of the shooting, suggesting a murder-suicide. A gun was also recovered, Beck said.

Police would not divulge the exact location of the shooting but confirmed it took place in the engineering building. 

According to tweets from the Daily Bruin, the school’s student newspaper, the suspect was a white male and estimated to be about six feet tall. He was reportedly seen wearing a black jacket and black pants.

Officers from the UCLA police; Los Angeles Police Department; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF); and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are responding to the incident.

Multiple reports indicated earlier on Wednesday that police had found a note and a handgun, according to unnamed sources. The LAPD was not immediately available for comment.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said President Barack Obama was briefed on the UCLA shooting while traveling on Air Force One.

Classes are scheduled to resume on Thursday, UCLA officials said. Final exams and commencement will also take place as scheduled.

“We want to resume normal operations as quickly as possible, so we will resume scheduled classes tomorrow morning,” Scott Waugh, UCLA’s executive vice chancellor and provost  said, according to ABC 7. “Faculty, staff and students should show up tomorrow and go through their regular routines and complete the quarter as planned.”
