The weird hug between Jerry Jones and Chris Christie goes viral

It’s a moment too strange for Twitter to pass up.

Last night’s playoff game between the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions was a nerve-racking affair for everybody involved. In a game dramatically affected by penalties and an unsteady Dallas offense, the Lions retained a comfortable lead until the fourth quarter, when the Cowboys overtook them by four points and remained there until the end. It was the kind of outcome that makes Lions fans feel like Dallas fans usually do after playoff games, so Cowboys fans were naturally ecstatic.

Regardless as to who they were rooting for, though, one moment, following a game-ending Lions fumble, made all fans take pause:

Yes, that’s Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, who’s a longtime Cowboys fan despite growing up in and leading the state that houses two other NFL teams. He’s engaging in an ecstatic hug with Jerry Jones and his son, Steve, and it culminates with Steve Jones shoving Christie’s face into Jerry’s armpit. It’s the sort of unsettling image that requires humor to be properly digested by the brain, and Twitter wasted no time in supplying the jokes:

We can only imagine what kind of love Christie will show if his team keeps winning.

Correction: This story previously indicated New Jersey was the only state to contain two NFL teams. Several states do. It also stated that Christie wouldn’t travel with the Cowboys to their game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Christie has recently promised to attend every remaining game of the team’s postseason run.
