We can all agree that most remakes are a waste of time. That counts double when they’re remaking a widely-acknowledged classic. But there’s an exception to every rule, and in this case it’s the new version of Suspiria.
Directed by Call Me By Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, Suspiria is an homage (as opposed to a direct remake) of the cult 1977 horror movie by Dario Argento. Set in a secluded European dance school, the original is beloved for its technicolor aesthetic, blaring prog-rock score, and gory fairytale horror.
Starring Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, and Chloë Grace Moretz, Suspiria‘s first trailer already looks fascinating. Without actually copying the original, it maintains a similarly creepy and unsettling tone. This time round, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke will provide the music.

This is a particularly interesting project for Guadagnino, who is known for making independent dramas like I Am Love (also starring Tilda Swinton) and Call Me By Your Name. While the original Suspiria had more of a 1970s slasher vibe, Guadagnino’s version may be more intense. When a clip screened at CinemaCon in April, critics were stunned by its extreme body horror.
Suspiria comes out on Nov. 2.
