The race to be the first person to discover new life on an alien world is a science fiction fan’s dream. It’s also what you’ll be doing in No Man’s Sky.

Developer Sean Murray from Hello Games gave IGN an 18-minute look into the procedurally generated galaxy of No Man’s Sky, by way of answering the most important, lingering question about the game. A tremendous fuss has been made of the vastness of the galaxy in No Man’s Sky, and how many unique star systems and planets and space fleets and aliens that players will encounter. Nobody’s sure what the moment-to-moment gameplay is going to be like, however.

The combined interview and play session with Murray demonstrates the basics of exploration and how it earns the player money, what it’s like to tick off planetary authorities by being too trigger happy, how they built a home-brewed periodic table of elements, and how you’ll keep track of all the stuff you discover and collect.
