Netflix announces new slate of anime originals

The studio behind Ghost in the Shell is leading the charge as Netflix ventures deeper into the world of anime originals.

After the resounding success of Castlevania, Netflix seems to be realizing the potential of well-made animated content. It already renewed Castlevania for a second season and hired on showmaker Adi Shankar to bring us an animated Assassin’s Creed series. The studio behind Cowboy Bebop and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Bones, is working on a new series called A.I.C.O. Incarnation, and teaming up with the creators of Ghost in the Shell for B: The Beginning. 

With the live action Death Note movie coming to Netflix later this month, the list of anime and anime-inspired content headed our way has gotten pretty extensive.

Here is a list of some of the animes we can expect on Netflix in 2018.

A.I.C.O Incarnation

This story about a monstrous artificial life form rampaging around a facility that divers brave to secure samples is perfect for sci-fi fans. The trailer alone (watch above) is heart pounding, and considering the people behind it, the show is likely to be a must-watch.

B: The Beginning

The plot in this sci-fi fantasy revolves around the work of an investigator as he hunts for information about a mysterious criminal organization and a serial killer, known only as Killer B.

Baki

Get ready for the swelling muscles and shredded shirts that Dragon Ball Z familiarized us with. This intense series about Baki, a fighter in training, taking on death row inmates is perfect for fans of martial arts.

Devilman Crybaby

This dark anime, based on the 1972 original, centers around protagonist Akira Fudo. Fudo can transform into a human-demon hybrid who must fight off hordes of invading demons to save the world.

Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya

This reimagining of the classic series looks to be the perfect fit for Sailor Moon fans. It follows a group of heroes equipped with heavenly armor based on the constellations as they protect the goddess Athena against the other Greek gods.

Lost Song

For a more lighthearted anime, look to Lost Song for its story, following two young singers whose magical tunes can heal wounds and create water.

Sword Gai

A fantasy story with a modern setting, this anime follows a tormented young man whose arm, accidentally severed in a smithing incident, fuses with a demonic sword. It is based on the popular manga by Toshiki Inoue.

These are not the only animes headed to Netflix, which has also teased at licensed originals that will be added to the collection shortly after their debut in Japan. Among those listed are Children of the Whales and Fate/ApocryphaThere are many more where those came from, so get ready to waste most of 2018 on anime.
