If you have a smartphone and a fondness for the world of Harry Potter, you’ll want to listen up. Developer Jam City is making a mobile game called Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery, set to launch in spring 2018.
Described as a “narrative role-playing game,” Hogwarts Mystery is unlike any previous Harry Potter game in one particular way. Instead of playing as one of the well-known young wizards from the books and movies, you can finally create your own in-game avatar. Once you do, you’ll be able to explore the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry on your own. You’ll attend classes taught by familiar faces, hang out with Albus Dumbledore, and generally live life as a Hogwarts student.
Unfortunately, you probably won’t be brushing elbows with the likes of Hermione, Ron, Harry, or any of the other familiar kids. The game takes place during the 1980s before those students attended the school.
Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery falls under the Portkey Games label, a division of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment whose sole purpose is to produce games set in the Harry Potter universe. (Portkey is also responsible for the upcoming augmented reality game Harry Potter: Wands Unite, which is being made by the creators of Pokémon Go).
