Doom won over gamers back in 1993 with a first-person shooter about a Marine fighting hordes of demons. Since then, the franchise has spawned a number of sequels and reboots, including a new version of the game expected to debut at E3 in June.
But before Bethesda Softworks‘s current iteration of the game, what’s come to be known as Doom 4 languished in development for years. Now, we’re finally getting a look at that doomed Doom.
Fan site Doomworld has posted purported video from Doom 4, and even if the footage represents cutscenes versus in-engine gameplay, the scenes stray from what the Doom franchise is all about. Humans struggling against an incomprehensible alien menace sounds more like the Resistance franchise than Doom.
The footage was taken from a clip reel posted by AGB Videos on YouTube, attributed as the work of Mark Bristol, the art director on Doom 4. The Daily Dot contacted Bristol to confirm the authenticity of the video, but we did not hear back by publication time. If he does respond, this story will be updated.
Here is a higher-quality version of the footage.
We haven’t seen much of Bethesda’s new Doom game that went into development after Doom 4 was shelved. An official teaser released Monday has only has a few seconds of game footage.
