Mackie replaces Jenna Coleman, who played Clara Oswald. Peter Capaldi will continue to play the Twelfth Doctor next season.
The announcement occurred at halftime during the FA Cup semifinal match between soccer teams Everton and Manchester United. Radio Times predicted the news on Friday by scrutinizing Mackie’s Twitter account and Capaldi’s visit to a play in which Mackie starred.
Mackie’s résumé is short, with one appearance in the British daytime soap opera Doctors.
The 10th season will be the last for Doctor Who‘s lead writer Steven Moffat, who announced his departure from the show in January.
