Moving what puzzlemaker Tony Fisher claims is the largest functioning Rubik’s Cube ever looks like a serious workout.
The cube, weighing a whopping 220 pounds, is over five feet tall. Fisher, who is based in the U.K., said it took a few weeks to make this giant cube, and he has been working on it since January. He posted a video of the functional cube on YouTube, and although it’s totally possible for one person to maneuver the cube, it doesn’t look easy.
“I wanted to make the largest cube I could, but its final size was determined by a combination of things,” he says in the video. “I wanted to be able to take the cube into the house. I also wanted the cube to be able to be used by one person, like the original, so it couldn’t be too heavy or too big.”
To assuage the skeptics, Fisher walked around the cube a number of times and made sure to film himself moving the cube without cutting the video. His ultimate goal is to wind up a Guinness World Record holder.
He notes that the “Groovik’s Cube” at New Jersey’s Liberty Science Center might have him beat with its 26-foot-tall structure, but it can’t be controlled manually and there are no stickers on the squares.
“I’ve always been fascinated by world records, and to be honest, the Guinness Book of Records is the only book I’ve ever enjoyed reading,” he said.
