While working the cash register at Bookshop Santa Cruz a few days ago, manager Kat Bailey was overcome by a strange feeling that someone was watching her.
And she was right.
On the back of the bookshop door was a large poster of Steve Jobs, promoting Walter Isaacson’s biography on the late Apple co-founder. Every time she looked up “that striking face was staring” right at her, Bailey told the Daily Dot. So instead of getting weired out, she and her co-workerNici McCown got creative.
They started Watched by Steve, a Tumblr blog that features Jobs’ biography cleverly placed in photos of bookstore workers and customers. In less than two days, the blog has collected 100 followers and 20 reblogs.
“We are big-time fans of Jobs. Almost everyone in the store owns an Apple product, as far as I know. I have a Macbook, and I love it,” Bailey said. “There is definitely a fascination with and admiration of Jobs in our store. We also really do love the cover, and we see this as a tribute to great book design. You just can’t stop staring at it.”
Bailey has been working at the shop as used book manager for about three years. This November the shop will celebrate its 45 year anniversary. She hopes the blog inspires others to have fun with Jobs’ biography and not just read it.
“We definitely want to encourage people to take their own pictures! The possibilities are endless,” Bailey said. “I can’t tell you how excited we are that people are enjoying this as much as we are.”
