Before the age of the Internet, telling a girl or guy he or she was attractive took some guts.
Today, all it takes is a worldwide Twitter trending topic.
For the last 24 hours, the hashtag #10followersifindattractive has been mentioned more than 150,000 times with everyone from adolescents to adults sharing their affections, according to statistics from Topsy, a social media search engine.
For most people the trending topic has been an excuse to gush over someone they’ve known forever (or never met). It also is serving as a harsh reminder that no one (at least on Twitter) finds them attractive.
“Damn I didn’t make nobodys #10FollowersIFindAttractive list. Either I need to step my cookies up or yall blind,” tweeted @mishtisha15 and more than a dozen other people.
For most people, this form of rejection is not a big deal. But according to Pew Research, 18 percent of Twitter users fall between the ages of 18 to 29. And that study doesn’t include the thousands of high schoolers that troll the site. For these young teenagers, rejection can be a bitter pill to swallow.
Twitter is a tool for instant, and widespread, communication. But sometimes, the lack of communication is more insulting.
