The Vaporeon meme continues to haunt Pokémon fans horrified by the way the internet did this little monster dirty. But some people still can’t get enough of the twisted take on Vaporeon’s relationship to humanity that launched a thousand memes. Of all the Pokémon to drum up drama, not many would have placed their bets on this guy—but that might be exactly why this particular meme, and its origins, have made such a lasting mark.
Let’s dive into the evolution of this cartoon controversy.
What is the Vaporeon meme?
First, an introduction to Vaporeon itself. Vaporeon is a water-type Pokémon that has been around since the franchise’s first Nintendo games were released in 1996. It was considered one of the most unique of the original 151 Pokémon, as players had to choose to evolve an Eevee into one of three possible creatures using a stone that corresponded with its type, rather than letting it evolve naturally throughout gameplay. If a player utilized a Water Stone, Eevee became Vaporeon.
Vaporeon memes, however, do one of the things the internet does best—take something completely innocuous and turn it sexual. In this particular instance, the memeification of this cartoon creature revolves around the unhinged idea that Vaporeon is the most compatible with humans out of all the Pokémon.
If you don’t already know the history of the Vaporeon meme, you’re probably asking yourself: how in the world did we get here? The answer, which shouldn’t come as a shock, is 4chan.
Where did the Vaporeon copypasta come from?
In 2018, things took a questionable turn for Vaporeon, thanks to an overly enthusiastic 4chan user who decided to spout off their feelings about the water-type Pokémon’s suitability as a sexual mate for humans.
“Hey guys, did you know that in terms of male human and female Pokémon breeding, Vaporeon is the most compatible Pokémon for humans? Not only are they in the field egg group, which is mostly comprised of mammals, Vaporeon are an average of 3″03′ tall and 63.9 pounds. this means they’re large enough to be able to handle huamn dicks, and with their impressive Base Stats for HP and access to Acid Armor, you can be rough with one. Due to their mostly water based biology, there’s no doubt in my mind that you could easily have sex with one for hours without getting sore. They can also learn the moves Attract, Baby-Doll Eyes, Captivate, Charm, and Tail Whip, along with not having fur to hide nipples, so it’d be incredibly easy for one to get you in the mood. With their abilities Water Absorb and Hydration, they can easily recover from fatigue with enough water. No other Pokémon comes close to this level of compatibility. Also, fun fact, if you pull out enough, you can make your Vaporeon turn white.”
The text was so outrageous and caught so many people off guard that it soon became copypasta, a type of meme that’s just a block of text copied from the original and pasted in different scenarios around the internet, regardless of whether or not it makes sense to do so.
As it spread, the copypasta inspired related memes and fan art alluding to the original post in a way that only perpetually online people could understand.
Why don’t people like Vaporeon?
Not everyone was comfortable with the idea of sexualizing a children’s cartoon monster, even as a joke. As a result, the Vaporeon meme became fairly controversial, particularly among some members of the Pokémon community who felt Vaporeon’s good reputation had been besmirched.

Others, however, simply pointed to Rule 34, which has long proclaimed that if something exists, the internet is going to make porn about it. No exceptions.
The persistence of the memes ultimately led to some Pokéfans launching a counterattack of wholesome Vaporeon memes and commentary that mimicked the original copypasta.

Despite their best efforts, the original Vaporeon copypasta continues to pop up, both in online Pokémon communities and, sometimes, where people least expect it. But if Vaporeon breeding meme humor isn’t exactly your cup of tea, now you know—if you ever come across an image of Vaporeon coupled with the foreboding phrase, “Hey guys, did you know…” it’s time to make like a wild Pokémon evading capture and flee.
