No matter your profession, you can probably relate to the hustle. Or the grind. Or any other expression used to refer to the stress and monotony of earning a living. In other words, these memes are for everyone just trying to get that dough.

Where did ‘let’s get this bread’ memes come from?

“Let’s get this bread” has existed as a meme for a while and was probably used as a real-life expression even before that.

According to Know Your Meme, the earliest known iteration of the phrase was in Rich Boy’s song “Let’s Get This Paper,” released on March 13, 2007. The first verse of the song has Rich Boy rapping, “R.I.P. Pooh Bear, that’s my dead homie/Fuck that other shit, hey, let’s get this bread homie.”

The phrase didn’t begin the transition to meme status for another decade. In 2017, Twitter user @carlyxnicole posted a picture of DJ Khaled photoshopped onto the Batpod with the caption “good morning let’s get this bread.”

The memes make a full circle

Even though “let’s get this bread” refers to making money, the proliferation of the phrase means that people also began using the meme in a more literal manner.

LGBT stands for ‘let’s get this bread’

There’s also become a subcategory of “let’s get this bread” memes centered around the fact that the letters amount to LGBT.

Possibly the first known association of this came from Twitter user @sadgirlkms in 2018:

Of course, there’s one glaring issue here—the letters are not in the correct order.

But memes have never needed to be flawlessly logical, and LGBT = let’s get this bread has continued to circulate just as surely as the original meme.

So whether you’re out to make some cash, hungry, or just gay, let’s get this bread!
