As Vanessa Carlton once famously sang, “Making my way downtown, walking fast, faces pass, and I see a ginormous tortoise cruising by.”
OK, maybe those weren’t her exact words, but there is indeed a shelled reptile taking Tokyo by storm simply by strolling along the city’s streets.
Recently, a man was spotted patiently walking the magnificent beast through the neighborhood of Tsukishima and the busier, upscale Ginza area. According to RocketNews24, it’s an African spurred tortoise.

If you’re a pet lover who likes to take things slow, definitely look into raising a tortoise. But don’t underestimate them: I grew up with a pet tortoise, and one day he got out of our backyard and made it down the cul-de-sac in a matter of minutes. Slow and steady wins the race, after all.
