On Tuesday, Deborah Cohan was about to go into surgery for a double mastectomy. But rather than internalize any fears she had, she found a different way to channel her emotions.
A flash mob, of course.
But this wasn’t your typical flash mob. Cohan is an OB/GYN, and right before her surgery, she invited her surgical and anesthesia teams at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco to a dance party, where they all shook a tailfeather to Beyoncé’s “Get Me Bodied.” But Cohan had visions of a bigger flash mob that day.
On Nov. 1, she posted to her blog, where she’s been chronicling her experience with cancer. She asked others to dance to the same song at the same time and film it, as a show of solidarity, but also an expression of joy in the face of illness:
“I have visions of a healing video montage. Nothing brings me greater joy than catalyzing others to dance, move, be in their bodies.”
Cohan hasn’t posted since her surgery, but she’ll likely be uploading some of those videos once she’s recovered. It’s true, though: Beyoncé can heal us all.
