President Donald Trump is scheduled to give his second State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress tonight.
Trump was originally scheduled to give the annual speech late last month, but it was delayed amid the longest government shutdown in the country’s history as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the president sparred in letters about when exactly it would be held. After the president announced that the government would be re-opened temporarily, the speech was rescheduled for tonight.
What is the State of the Union?
The State of the Union is an annual address from the president of the United States to a joint session of Congress. It is typically a chance for the president to not only talk directly with lawmakers, but also the American public about their accomplishments and goals heading into the next year.
Unlike his first State of the Union address, Trump will face a divided Congress, with the House of Representatives controlled by Democrats. It is likely the president will tout the country’s economy and touch on immigration issues–two topics he has brought up consistently in recent months.
What time is the State of the Union?
Trump is scheduled to give his second State of the Union address at 8pm CT tonight.
