“The Trump Foundation must immediately cease soliciting contributions or engaging in any other fundraising activities in New York,” James Sheehan, who heads charities department at the New York Attorney General’s Office, wrote in a letter sent to the Trump Foundation on Friday, one day after details surfaced about the foundation collecting donations from people in New York without being registered in the state.
The cease-and-desist order comes amid a tight race for the White House between Republican nominee Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton. Trump has repeatedly accused the Clinton Foundation, operated by the former secretary of state’s family, of improperly giving donors access to resources within the federal government.
