President Donald Trump suggested that he may try a new tactic to try and get support for his much-talked-about wall along the country’s southern border: reverse psychology.
During a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania on Thursday night, the president lamented to the crowd that Democrats oppose “anything” his administration is attempting to do—which is not an unusual thing in modern politics, as Republicans can attest to during President Barack Obama‘s tenure in office—and decided that he may have to try and use that opposition to his advantage.
Setting up his new strategy, Trump blasted Democrats for wanting “open borders” and then blasted critics of him calling gang members “animals.”
“The Democrats, anything I want—and it’s not even the Republicans, I don’t know if they care about the Republicans, they care about me. They’re very concerned—anything I want, they want to oppose,” Trump told the crowd. “You know, I just figured out how to do the wall. I’ll say ‘I don’t want to build the wall’ and they’ll insist on building it. I just figured that out right now.”
The border wall has been on Trump’s mind in the past week.
On Tuesday, Trump said the government shutting down over the wall was a “very small price to pay” for border security.
“I don’t care what the political ramifications are, our immigration laws and border security have been a complete and total disaster for decades, and there is no way that the Democrats will allow it to be fixed without a Government Shutdown,” he wrote in a series of tweets. “Border Security is National Security, and National Security is the long-term viability of our Country. A Government Shutdown is a very small price to pay for a safe and Prosperous America!”
He made similar remarks over the weekend.

Shortly after discovering his strategy for reverse psychology, Trump then mimicked a stabbing from the MS-13 gang by flailing his arm around in a cutting motion.
