When Donald Trump ripped Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) early Saturday morning for calling him an illegitimate president, it didn’t take long for Lewis’s Democratic colleagues to fire back at the president-elect.
And their tweets were brutal.
Not many Republicans have weighed in on the issue, but the left side of the political aisle has been responding all day Saturday.

Ahead of #MLKday2017, let us remember that many have tried to silence @repjohnlewis over the years. All have failed.

Even Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska defended Lewis.
John Lewis and his “talk” have changed the world.https://t.co/qeUloAkeTx https://t.co/aH2vDLjKk9

And perhaps this is one reason why Republicans, particularly in Lewis’s home state, have stayed out of the fight.
Ga Repubs won’t defend Trump saying Lewis is “all talk.” One example why: this resolution from GOP-controlled Ga House praising Lewis #gapol pic.twitter.com/xtiw3oi0KW
