Former CNN anchor T.J. Holmes was pulled over Monday by two police officers just one mile away from his home in Atlanta, Ga. Just after being stopped, Holmes took matters into his own hands and proceeded to live-tweet the entire encounter.
Holmes quickly snapped a photo of the cops in his rearview mirror, tweeting to his 49,000 followers that “driving while black ain’t no joke!” Holmes went on to write that the “officer has yet to give a reason for why he stopped me.” Only after Holmes asked did the police officer say, “wanted to make sure you had insurance on the car.”
Holmes continued to live-tweet the episode for the next 10 minutes.
“this is a damn shame. Officer is literally stumbling over his words trying to explain why he stopped me.”
Holmes’s Twitter followers immediately swooped in to defend the officers, saying the cops were “star struck” and “probably recognized you then.”
One of Holmes Twitter followers, T. Allen, later tweeted, “America has no idea what being ‘black’ means in this day and age. Would be a great segment for your new show on @BET.”
Holmes left his position at CNN for BET Networks in December 2011 and is set to debut a new late night show in October, called Don’t Sleep With T.J. Holmes.
Apparently, you shouldn’t pull him over, either—unless you don’t mind the attention on Twitter.
