Pope Francis already has Twitter on lock. Now he’s starting a “new journey.” On Saturday morning, the Pope announced that he’s on Instagram.
I am beginning a new journey, on Instagram, to walk with you along the path of mercy and the tenderness of God.

So far, the account only has one post: a photo of the Pope deep in prayer. But the account didn’t appear out of the blue. Last month, Pope Francis met with Instagram’s CEO Kevin Systrom, who said in a post that they spoke of “the power of images to unite people across different cultures and languages.” This account obviously isn’t going to be all selfies and brunch photos.
The account already has more than 470,000 followers, and the Pope has his own custom emoji, so he’s off to a good start.
