Occupy Oakland, an offshoot of the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City, has had a very rough 24 hours.
Before dawn on Tuesday morning, the Occupy Oakland tent city was raided by Oakland law enforcement, who used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the protestors.
Twelve hours later, when protestors tried to take back the area, police responded with similarly harsh tactics.
Twitter quickly became the go-to choice for protesters to live-tweet status updates and share videos and photos of the event.
The Oakland Police Department was a trending topic on Twitter early Wednesday morning. According to Topsy.com, a twitter tracking service, “Occupy Oakland” was tweeted more than 20,000 times in 24 hours.
