In the 15-second video, Barrett can be seen doing a choreographed dance to the sound of a man’s voice reading from the religious text. Barrett has over 6 million followers on her verified account.

Many who saw the video were offended by Barrett’s antics.

“Hi @nessaabarrett I hope you realize that this is very disrespectful and offensive to the Muslim community!!” Twitter user @Leeza_M_ wrote.

Many others shared similar sentiments.

“So Nessa that tiktok girl literally danced and threw it back using a quran sound… that’s so disrespectful and messed up,” user @mochibs wrote.

Another user saw the Quran dance rendition as a sign of the times.

“The end is near. People dancing to a recitation of the quran and then captioning it ‘my fav sound’ and her excuse was ‘I ran out of tiktok ideas,’” user @deqssxo wrote.

Apparently, Barrett issued an apology for the video, but no one was buying it. She blamed the creation of the video on running out of ideas and also pointed to her Egyptian stepmother to try to get a pass.

That didn’t stop many from threatening to cancel the TikTok star and using the hashtag #NessaBarrettIsOverParty to criticize her.

“YALL THIS GIRL NAMED NESSA FROM TIKTOK HAD THE AUDACITY TO ‘THROW IT BACK’ TO AN AUDIO OF A MAN RECITING QURAN. AND THEN GIVE A HALF ASSED APOLOGY SAYING HER STEP MOM IS EGYPTIAN WTFFF CANCELLEDDDD #nessabarrettisoverparty,” one user wrote.

The video has since been deleted.
