A mysterious emoticon has been a top U.S. trending topic on Twitter all morning. The symbol appears to have originated in Indonesia.
Based on searches on Topsy and Twitter, the emoticon, Θ ̨Θƪ,was first mentioned by @FaktaElohGue of Indonesia on Nov. 13 using a Blackberry mobile device. The tweet also included the text “just you in my mind,” but it did not explain what it means.
Research In Motion’s Blackberry smartphones are the mobile devices of choice in Indonesia, controlling 43 percent of market, according to the Canada Broadcasting Corporation. And with more than a dozen emoticon-related apps to download for the Blackberry, it’s no wonder people like @FaktaElohGue have gotten creative.
The emoticon has been trending in the U.S. since about 4 a.m. EST and has collected more than 11,000 mentions, according to Topsy, a social media search engine.
The emoticon’s meaning remains unclear, but it looks like a mix of 4chan’s “look of disapproval,” LulzSec’s logo, and a pair of hipster glasses. Here’s some other ideas Twitter users came up with.
