Nick Cardello, 54, and Kurt English, 52, have been together for exactly 25 years, according to Buzzfeed News. And they celebrated their recent anniversary by attending the Equality March in Washington, D.C., last week.

While at the event, Cardello and English decided to re-create a photo they took 24 years prior. Cardello meant for the post to just be a sweet capsule of their relationship, but it gained new meaning for the internet.

In a tweet that was not uploaded by Cardello or English, the photo was captioned “it’s just a phase,” repurposing the homophobic advice given to teens of older generations as inspiration for today’s LGBTQ youth.

In an interview with the New York Daily News, Cardello said it’s rare to see the type of photo they took in the media.
