A day after the president of the University of Texas College Republicans got flack for an inappropriate comment on Twitter about President Barack Obama, the student group was issuing an apology. In a statement to the student newspaper, the group said Cassie Wright’s tweet, “My president’s black, he snorts a lot of crack. Holla. #2012 #Obama,” did not reflect the views or values of the College Republicans.
Wright’s tweet was the second inappropriate comment in a month written by an acting president of the student group, a position she took over after Lauren Pierce tweeted “Y’all as tempting as it may be, don’t shoot Obama. We need him to go down in history as the WORST president we’ve EVER had! #2012,”
“The UT College Republicans neither condones any ‘tweeted’ remarks, nor any statements made by any member of our organization that may be hurtful and lacking in sensitivity,” wrote College Republican spokesman Cesar Villareal to The Daily Texan.
“The opinion of our President Wright is that of her own not in keeping with our core values, our standards, and our code of conduct. While some within our organization may not respect the current President, UT College Republicans does respect the office of the President of the United States. We are all Americans, and even if we do not agree with certain policies, the UT College Republicans wish all our leaders well, as they are all dedicated to public service. I personally apologize for [the] ‘tweeted’ remark.”
The statement appears to kill any rumors that the tweet was fake and that someone had hacked into Wright’s Twitter account. On Tuesday, local media outlets were reporting that people who know Wright were shocked by the message, suggesting it was out of character for the student.
Regardless of character, most people on Twitter seemed to have already made up their mind about Wright.
“Cassie Wright you must be smoking crack. Republicans are crazy” wrote Beatmizer.
