American audiences got Robert Downey Jr. in their Call of Duty live-action commercials. Chinese audiences got a different cast member from The Avengers.
Captain America star Chris Evans is the centerpiece of a new live-action commercial for Call of Duty Online, a version of Call of Duty designed for the Chinese market. The ad is shot in the same vein as the live-action Call of Duty ad campaign that ran under the tag “There’s a soldier in all of us,” showing regular people who are supposed to be playing CoD multiplayer, accompanied by some Hollywood stars.
Here’s one of the “There’s a soldier in all of us” ads featuring a brief appearance from Robert Downey Jr. in some sort of VTOL jet fighter. This commercial was part of the ad campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Notice how it, like the Call of Duty Online live-action spot above, makes sure to reference Zombies mode.

Call of Duty Online or CODOL was introduced in China in early 2013. It is a free-to-play version of Call of Duty multiplayer that re-uses graphics, map designs, and other elements from previous CoD games, and is supported by a microtransaction model.
Activision, the publisher of the Call of Duty series, and game developer Raven Software, that worked on Call of Duty: Ghosts and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, developed CODOL. The game is distributed by Tencent, a company so huge it just opened an online private bank in China. Tencent is also the major player in mobile game distribution in China.
Call of Duty: Online may be designed for the Chinese market, but of course that doesn’t stop Westerners from getting in on the fragging. Here’s a new video of CODOL gameplay, published on New Year’s Day from a YouTuber who goes by Pyonic.
