Destiny’s new loot cave is even better than the old one

Bungie would rather you stop shooting into caves for loot. They even nerfed the old spot for farming. But the new spot is even better. You can’t stop Destinyville.

Destiny is a game about loot, which you get by grinding the same content over and over again. If the repetitive content at least gave players the loot they wanted, no one would look for workarounds or exploits—like the loot cave.

Bungie got rid of the original spot, but the new loot cave is new and improved. At the old cave, if you failed to kill all the enemies as they came running out, you had to chase them all over and get rid of them before another wave of spawns would generate. At the new cave, if you get in the right position, the idiots will come running straight at you, which makes cleanup easy.

Bungie announced its first set of upcoming changes to Destiny, and to the studio’s credit, it’s listening to fans. It’s going to do something about the Cryptarch’s tendency toward taking Legendary engrams and turning them into loot no one wants. Bungie is going to add new communication options for random players when they’re matched up on Strikes and Raids, balance weapons, and make Bosses less grindy.

All good changes. But then there’s this gem:

The social experience of a cave farming run is amazing: the herding to get a team of Guardians all behind the line and firing in the right direction, the rush to grab the loot, the scramble when the panic wave starts, the beckoning glow from inside the cave. The speed at which the community organized around this activity was inspiring and humbling to us.

But shooting at a black hole for hours on end isn’t our dream for how Destiny is played.

Which, of course, is precisely and almost immediately, what Destiny turned into again after Bungie announced these changes.

Here’s the thing about gamers: They know what they want, and if you don’t give it to them, they’ll find a way to get it, whether you’re talking about the Angry Birds player who will repeat the same level over and over again to get the maximum number of stars, or the Destiny player who wants their engrams.

And the loot cave is amazing. The results of our test, just to make sure we were reporting accurate information to you:

Not the best haul—no Legendaries in there—but that’s what going back to the cave is for.
