Here at the Daily Dot, we swap GIF images with each other every morning. Now we’re looping you in. In the Morning GIF, we feature a popular—or just plain cool—GIF we found on Reddit, Canvas, or elsewhere on the Internet.
A long time ago, by which we mean 2009, in a galaxy far, far away, by which we mean on Tripod, something glorious emerged.
And then it just sat there for three years, like a decommissioned droid in a Tatooine scrap heap, until someone on Reddit noticed it, and then all hell broke loose. It was an epic firefight, with 12,040 up votes and 10,233 down votes, netting out to a victory of 1,807 for a GIF by FoldsFive, which depicts the entire Star Wars movie The Empire Strikes Back in era-appropriate 8-bit style.
Yes. The whole thing.
We like The Empire Strikes Back, but we love A New Hope, aka Farmboy Luke and His Trusty Droids, having seen it 15 times, so of the series of three GIF’ed Star Wars movies, this is the one we’ve chosen to feature as our Morning GIF.
They’re part of a series called PixelMash Theater, which reimagines epic movies of the ’80s as 8-bit GIF animations. Sadly, the project is not ongoing, so the world may never see the sure-to-be-divine 8-bit rendition of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, but a geek can dream!
For now, we have these glorious GIFs of the first three (and only good) Star Wars movies. Who cares if there’s no sound? It’s not like we don’t know all the lines by heart anyway…
