Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and wife Priscilla Chan took to the social network today to announce the arrival of their new daughter, Max.
In a lengthy note tilted “A letter to our daughter,” Zuckerberg and Chan offered their viewpoints of what the world is lacking, and what the couple plans to do to fix what they see as the planet’s biggest issues.
“Priscilla and I are so happy to welcome our daughter Max into this world!” Zuckerberg posted, adding “For her birth, we wrote a letter to her about the world we hope she grows up in.”
Zuckerberg also thanks the community at large for their support and well wishes. “Thank you to everyone in this community for all your love and support during the pregnancy. You’ve given us hope that together we can build this world for Max and all children,” he notes.
The letter itself highlights some of the ways the couple believes the world has been improving in recent years, including shrinking poverty and more education initiatives, but is largely focused on the various challenges the human race still faces today. To that end, the couple is pledging to donate a whopping 99 percent of their Facebook shares—roughly $45 billion—to solving problems ranging from climate change to curing diseases.
