This morning, Tucker Carlson’s political news site, The Daily Caller, reported that traffic to socialists.com and communists.com was being redirected and winding up at President Obama’s campaign site, instead.
Clearly, the hack was politically motivated. In case you hadn’t noticed, there are people in this country who think Obama would love nothing more than to turn the United States into Soviet Russia.
The socialists.com redirect no longer worked by this afternoon, but typing communists.com still takes some users to BarackObama.com, presumably fooling a number of Web-surfers into thinking they’d finally uncovered proof of Obama’s Bolshevik agenda—or at least giving them evidence to claim that.
@CarolVicic, a self-proclaimed “patriot” who refers to President Obama as the “Disaster-in-Chief,” alerted conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh of the redirect via Twitter, claiming it was “Proof Obama is a communist.”
Meanwhile, @TaggertGirl tweeted, “For those who are still unbelievers – go to http://communists.com and see what comes up. I’ll try to refrain from saying I told you so.”
This isn’t the first time a URL redirect has been used to make a statement about the upcoming election. If you type “ilikeromneycare.com” in your browser bar, you will be redirected to a page commemorating the 2-year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, known informally as “Obamacare.” The implication is that the health care plan signed by Mitt Romney when he was the Govenor of Massachusetts bears striking similarities to the health care reform act supported by President Obama, a heresy for some Republicans.
The perpetrator of the socialists/communists gag is still unknown. Adam Schweigert, a digital strategist in Columbus, Ohio, tweeted that the domain registration information for the two sites is private.
Sounds like an obvious KGB conspiracy to us.
