A new website, We the Action, is hoping to match lawyers seeking pro-bono work and nonprofits that need help during these “challenging times.”
We the Action is like a dating website for politically minded lawyers and organizations, “connecting lawyers with causes” as more nonprofits have sprung up in the wake of President Donald Trump‘s election.
“More and more Americans are concerned about policy changes that impact their families, friends, neighbors, or fellow human beings,” We the Action’s about page reads. “Simultaneously, the number of nonprofit organizations in need of legal assistance grows every day.”
The website allows lawyers to create a profile that lists their areas of expertise, what areas of law they practice, and how they can help nonprofits with their specific missions. It also allows lawyers to browse nonprofits that have asked for help.
Nonprofits, meanwhile, can explain how volunteers can help them and search the directory of lawyers for ones they think might best suit their needs.
“After the election and as Trump was coming, there was this huge outpouring of lawyers who just wanted to know what they could do,” Marc Elias, We the Action’s board chairman, told Politico. “We ought to be able to match this great demand for legal services.”
Organizations that have paired up with We the Action include: , Voto Latino, Let America Vote, Equality New York, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the International Refugee Assistance Program, NARAL, and others.
“There is great need for legal support and so many skilled lawyers who want to participate in the pursuit of equality and justice,” Gabriel Blau of Equality New York, told Politico, “but until now, there hasn’t been a sufficiently focused and robust tool to make that match.”
