The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is set to vote today on a plan to repeal net neutrality, the Obama-era regulations that require all internet providers to treat web traffic equally.
If the vote is approved, broadband internet companies will be classified as Title 1 information services, giving them the power to restrict access or slow down certain websites. It could also lead to the rise of so-called internet “fast lanes,” or the prioritization of websites for companies willing to pay extra.
Despite months of public outcry (and a last-minute, overnight protest), it’s very likely the 3-2 Republican majority FCC—led by chairman Ajit Pai—will vote to dismantle net neutrality rules.
