President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday that aims to increase government support for developing artificial intelligence (AI) in the future.
The executive order, titled “Maintaining American Leadership In Artificial Intelligence,” asks for federal government resources to be directed toward developing AI. The order mandates that government agencies consider research and development of AI a “priority” as they set budgets for fiscal year 2020.
“Artificial Intelligence (AI) promises to drive growth of the United States economy, enhance our economic and national security, and improve our quality of life,” the executive order reads, later adding: “Continued American leadership in AI is of paramount importance to maintaining the economic and national security of the United States and to shaping the global evolution of AI in a manner consistent with our Nation’s values, policies, and priorities.”
The order also directs access to “high-quality and fully traceable Federal data, models, and computing resources” for AI research and development.
Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and advisor, celebrated the news earlier in the day.
“This afternoon, POTUS will sign an Executive Order to advance American leadership in Artificial Intelligence, continuing this Admin’s commitment to ensuring America’s dominance in industries of the future,” she wrote on Twitter.

The executive order further directs the heads of research and development of various agencies to “explore opportunities for collaboration” with non-federal groups and organizations.
“Continued American leadership in Artificial Intelligence is of paramount importance to maintaining the economic and national security of the United States,” Trump said in a statement released by the White House.
