“Romnesia” song resurrects obscure 70s country-rock band

“When he said in the debate, ‘That’s not my tax plan,’ something in his chemistry had changed,” Pousette-Dart sings.

In 1977, a Massachusetts country-rock group called the Pousette-Dart Band recorded an easy breezy, Eagles-evoking album called Amnesia, which altogether wasn’t that celebrated despite the fact that it had a song called “Amnesia” that my dad will still listen to when he does the dishes.

The song was about trying to make sense “of all the lovin’ times that we did have” and hoping that the band’s collective loss of memory was the product of amnesia rather than blacking out.

“Sometimes I feel okay, but when I talk, I stutter,” bandleader Jon Pousette-Dart sang. “I can’t remember back a few minutes ago. The doctors all come up with the same answer. Boy, if I’m that far gone, there’s nowhere left to go.”

The band broke up in 1981—Pousette-Dart has remained publicly at large since then—but a certain political meme has the Tennessee-based songwriter singing a new tune.

On Saturday, Pousette-Dart took to his YouTube channel to debut “Romnesia,” a 2:15 remake of the classic 1977 hit.

The song, which has only been viewed 423 times, plays on the Barack Obama-inspired meme of “Romnesia,” which the president coined late last week when referencing his opponent’s alleged knack for flip-flopping and backtracking on policies.

“When he said in the debate, ‘That’s not my tax plan,’ something in his chemistry had changed,” Pousette-Dart sings. “Though his hair looks awfully good in this election, he sold all his stock and shares to Bain.

“When I wake up, put the pieces all together. Of all the progress that we have, all I get is static from the Grand Old Party, but the song they’re singing has already been played.”

The same could be said for Pousette-Dart; the guy’s been singing this song for more than 30 years.

But this time it’s about Mitt Romney! So listen up and laugh, unless you too have a severe case of the dreaded Romnesia.
