Roger Stone, a GOP strategist and ally of President Donald Trump, will have to publicly apologize for spreading false statements about a Chinese businessman as a result of a lawsuit settlement, according to a new report.
Stone will have to run ads in national newspapers, and publish apologies on social media for publishing false statements on InfoWars, the Wall Street Journal reports. The lawsuit, which sought $100 million in damages, was brought by Guo Wengui.
NBC News reports the lawsuit alleges Stone made claims on InfoWars that Guo Wengui made illegal donations to Hillary Clinton.
As of Tuesday morning, no apology had been posted by the Republican strategist on his Instagram, his personal Facebook page, or the Facebook page for “Stone Cold Truth,” one of his websites.
In a statement to the Wall Street Journal, Stone said his actions were “irresponsible” and said he was “solely responsible” for apologizing publicly.
Stone has been linked to Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, specifically regarding the email dump of Clinton’s emails by WikiLeaks ahead of the election.
Earlier this month Trump praised Stone for having “guts” after he said he would not testify against the president.
