We’ve all been there—awkwardly using a ribbon and ruler to try and take our measurements, only to be off by a few centimeters here or there. Eventually, give up and figure a size medium will be close enough.

A smart measuring tape from XYZE called On is trying to make that whole process easier, and recently launched its crowdfunding campaign to bring the technology to consumers and designers both. With the smartphone-connected tape measure, you can take your measurements quickly and accurately, and have them saved while you shop online.

The device looks like a tape measurer with a digital makeover, and the tape can extend up to 160 centimeters (63 inches) around the body. On connects wirelessly to your mobile device, and a mobile app walks you through the setup process, measuring each part of your body that will be described in sizing charts.

Because body and style types vary (even in brick and mortar boutiques it’s hard to find something that fits perfectly) shopping online can be extra difficult. On hopes that by creating an automated measuring system, shoppers won’t have to guess whether or not a dress or jacket fits appropriately. They can simply refer to digital profile created via the On app.

XYZE has worked with partner retailers, and by using the data you provide the app, it can pull up what size you would be at a particular retailer. You might be a small in Diesel, but a size eight at Dolce and Gabbana.

There’s a month left in the Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, and people who are interested in being early adopters can pick one up for $45.
