The National Rifle Association is using the Paris robbery of Kim Kardashian as a way to bash American gun laws.
Gun-toting thieves dressed as police officers reportedly forced their way into Kardashian’s hotel room early Monday morning Paris time and stole more than $10 million in jewelry, along with her purse, cellphones, and more than $1,000 in cash.
The fact that the thieves had guns in Paris, France—a city with strict but ineffective gun laws—left the NRA unable to resist getting a jab in.

The sarcasm centers on the argument that better background checks would help eliminate crime and violence involving guns in the United States. While the issue of guns in the U.S. is highly complicated, studies have found that improved background checks do help—but they only go so far. To better solve the problem, studies show, the U.S would have to establish a national gun registry that links specific guns to their owner, which has been found in other nations to slow the flow of black- and gray-market gun purchases.
The NRA is staunchly against a government-run gun registry on the grounds that it could lead to mass confiscation—although it does maintain one of its own.
