China’s Twitter falls in love with Michelle Obama

The First Lady’s Democratic National Convention speech was shared thousands of times on Sina Weibo, with some users saying it moved them to tears.

Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday night was the talk of the town on American social media. The First Lady conquered more than just U.S. audiences, however. China’s web users have fallen in love.

A video of the First Lady’s speech (with Chinese subtitles) has been shared nearly 20,000 times on Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter-like microblogging service, and attracted more than 2,000 comments, most of which are effusive in their praise of the First Lady. In fact, if Weibo is any indication, Chinese Internet users shed a lot of tears last night.

Below, we’ve compiled a few select translations:

  • “Perfect. There’s no pretentious quotes, no pretty rhetoric, no preaching. Just total devotion to another person. It’s deeply moving.” Qianli Guang

Note that we’ve hardly cherry picked these quotes; they reflect the general attitude in the comments section. Sina Weibo users just really liked the First Lady’s speech.
