Grab los chips and la salsa: El Bloombito’s got a new New York issue to tweet about.
We first discovered El Bloombito, Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s Spanglish alter ego, after Hurricane Irene. The parody account made fun of the mayor’s attempts to translate hurricane warnings for Latino residents. Since then, the account’s fan base has doubled from 10,000 to 23,000 followers.
Now, El Bloombito is focusing on a new subject—Occupado Calle Wall Street.
The Spanish-unaware Twitter account is addressing the Occupy Wall Street protests in a charmingly out-of-touch approach:
“Occupado Calle Wall Street all tu want pero por favor not to occupado el Bermuda!”
“Ay Ay Ay! Todos los everybody esta en el Squaro de Times! Es Nuevo years already?”
After Hurricane Irene, the account’s ghostwriter, Rachel Figueroa-Levin, told the New York Observer that she was a fan of the real Mayor Bloomberg.
“To be honest, if he ran for a fourth term I’d probably vote for him again,” she said.
However, El Bloombito’s tweets have been slipping in some digs about the billionaire mayor’s economic status:
“Bonus Sundaymingo! While tus occupado calle wall street yo soy occupado mi grande vaulto de dinero!”
On her personal account, @Jewyorican, Figueroa-Levin has been tweeting her support for the Occupy Wall Street crowd.
Is Figueroa-Levin changing her mind about the mayor, or just writing biting and relevant criticism for our time? Since she didn’t get back to us by press time, we’ll just take these tweets at their funny face value.
