Do you remember your first time? Was it awkward because you didn’t know where to go and once there didn’t know which lever to pull?
Losing your voting virginity is both a little exciting and a little scary, as Lena Dunham, star of HBO’s Girls, attests in a new web video for supporting President Barack Obama’s reelection.
“Your first time shouldn’t be with just anybody, you want to do it with a great guy,” Dunham says. “My first time voting was amazing. It was this line in the sand. Before I was a girl, now I was a women. I went to the polling station, I pulled back the curtain and I voted for Barak Obama.”
The video, posted Thursday evening, quickly racked up the views on YouTube. The view counter was shortly stuck at 303 views, a well-known YouTube bug that’s a sure indication a video is surging in popularity. It wasn’t all positive attention, however. The video received 3,500 dislikes versus just 2,000 likes. It was also being bashed by conservative bloggers. The Right Scoop went as far as calling it “disgusting.”
“Talk about desperation,” the blog post read. “They’ve finally sunken to a new low trying to get the youth vote by comparing voting for the first time to having sex for the first time.”
But if conservatives don’t like sex and politics being mixed, then they would truly be appalled by how the two are mixed in Russia. In fact, when comparing Obama’s recent commercial to one for Vladimir Putin, Dunham’s is downright tame.
What do you think? Does Obama’s ad go too far or is the new web video just a sign of the times?
