Protecting your accounts is now easier and cheaper than ever. In fact, it’s now free.
LastPass, a popular password manager, announced on Wednesday that its app is now free across all devices. This means you can create strong passwords and have them easily accessible from every device you use without the need to purchase a premium subscription.
“By offering LastPass for free across all your devices, we’re making it that much easier for everyone to make good password habits the norm, while resetting the expectations of what a great password management experience should be in a multi-device world,” Joe Siegrist, vice president and general manager of LastPass, said in a blog post. “Because when you have a password manager that goes everywhere you do, you have a strong foundation for securing and managing your identity.”
That isn’t just marketing speak—Siegrist is right. Passwords remain an imperfect security solution primarily because it’s difficult to create passwords that are both strong and easy to remember. Password managers solve this problem by creating passwords for you and then storing them in an encrypted format.
In other words: You no longer have an excuse for using weak passwords that make it trivial for even the least skilled hackers to break into your accounts and potentially wreck your life.
LastPass ranks among the best password managers on the market, with functionality the extends beyond even paid apps. That said, there are plenty of others that work great and you should find one that works for you.
You can still purchase a LastPass Premium subscription for $1 per month, which allows you to share an account with up to five people, removes adds, gives you 1GB of encrypted file storage, and a few other handy features. But the free version works fine, so don’t feel like you need to spring the $12 a year for additional functionality if you don’t want to.
LastPass is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, and as a plugin for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Microsoft Edge, and Internet Explorer. You can download it in your app store of choice or right here.
