Writer Beth Skwarecki is pricing healthcare services on Lifehacker in terms of iPhones, after Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) said that those in need of health insurance should consider investing in healthcare instead of their iPhones. The average iPhone costs approximately $700. The average healthcare plan—up to $5,000.
Not only is this comparison unrealistic, but what Chaffetz implied with his statement is that the poor are responsible for their own poverty and lack of healthcare. And so the internet is poking fun at this parallel.
“If you twist your knee in New York City and need an ACL repair surgery (as I did a few years ago), Health Care Blue Book says that a ‘fair’ charge is 24 iPhones… If you decide to have a baby—or if you don’t have that choice thanks in part to the bill’s defunding Planned Parenthood—pushing it out will cost you an average of 12 iPhones,” Skwarecki’s writes.
Now, there is even a Twitter account that gets into the weeds on these harrowing stats.

For his part, Chaffetz should be concerned with providing more affordable healthcare to more Americans, than criticizing their inability to pay.
