Duolingo has a treat for all you hardcore Trekkies out there. The popular language app added a Klingon course to its website on Thursday, making it easier than ever to learn the Star Trek language. The lessons will eventually be made available on the iOS and Android app at an unspecified date, Engadget reported.
Like every Duolingo course, learning Klingon is free. Just head over to the site, press “Start Learning” and select how many minutes you want to study every day. Just don’t expect to learn the fictitious language overnight. It is now made up of around 3,000 official words, according to the Klingon Language Wiki.
Adding Klingon among the dozens of other human-spoken languages was challenging since there are very few people who speak it and even fewer who are fluent. Duolingo relied on volunteers led by Felix Malmenbeck, a fluent speaker from Sweden.
“I suspect that this will lead to an increased number of Star Trek fans continuing their studies of Klingon,” Malmenbeck told Engadget.
Duolingo isn’t the only place you can learn the language made popular by the cult original TV show. The online Klingon Language Institute is filled with people who want to study the tongue. The nonprofit organization, which was created to “promote and support” the constructed language, offers its own lessons.
Klingon isn’t the first constructed language Duolingo has offered to its more than 200 million users. In July, the platform added High Valyrian from The Games of Thrones to go along with Esperanto, an international auxiliary language and the most spoken conlang in the world.
