Donald Trump took some time out of his presidential schedule on Friday to tweet about the Time magazine Person of the Year award, how the moniker was offered to him, and how he turned it down. But Time said what Trump claimed wasn’t true, and now, the internet is laughing at his self-important, apparently false Twitter boast.
Trump has a history of fake news about Time—he had mocked-up magazine covers featuring Trump hanging in his golf clubs—and the magazine said Trump’s tweet on Friday was also false.
Here’s what Trump wrote Friday.
Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named “Man (Person) of the Year,” like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!

And Time’s response.
The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. TIME does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6.

That led a number of Twitter luminaries to mock Trump and say that they, too, were under consideration to be given big-time, important awards.
Bbc just called to say I was PROBABLY going to be named sports personality of the year but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!

.@nytimes just called to say I was PROBABLY going to be named comedienne of the year but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway! @andy_murray

Hate to tell you but that PROBABLY means you’re NOT Person of the Year. They just wanted a photo shoot. But I’m sure you still have that fake TIME cover somewhere in storage. https://t.co/HkW1XkKxXK

Sports Illustrated called and said I was probably going to be Sportsman of the Year, but it was going to take a long photo shoot and interview. I’m not proud of my recent perm and have a interpretive dance class at the interview time so I turned it down! No Thanks SI!!

But the biggest burn has to be awarded to Mark Hamill, who let us know that we’ve all missed a huge opportunity.
Time Magazine called to say that I was DEFINITELY going to be named “Man (Person) of the Year” but I would have to agree to leak major #Ep8 spoilers. I said “no problem”, but then they told me you turned it down and now I don’t want it anymore. Thanks anyway! https://t.co/0tPGr1cNEM
