Hillary Clinton‘s lead over President-elect Donald Trump in the popular vote tally now exceeds more than 1 million votes.
Clinton currently has just over 61,964,000 votes compared to Trump’s nearly 60,962,00, according to a detailed count compiled by David Wasserman of the Cook Political Report.
Despite the lead in number of ballots cast, Clinton still lost the presidential election to Trump, who won the Electoral College with 306 electoral votes, 36 more than he needed to win the election.
The disconnect between Clinton’s popular vote lead and Trump’s victory has sparked some, including Democratic lawmakers, to push for the abolition of the Electoral College. Trump, meanwhile, has flipped his position on the American democratic institution, which he once called a “disaster” and now believes is “genius.”
