A new trend is emerging at one of China’s most important political events, the annual meeting of the National People’s Congress: Chinese reporters are going solo, using selfie sticks to ditching their cumbersome camera crews for a metal pole that costs a couple of bucks.

Go ahead, laugh. The selfie stick seemed pretty dumb when it was only used for, well, selfies. But now the device is an invaluable reporting tool, and it’s only a matter of time before Western reporters and citizen journalists alike adopt this reporting practice.
